Hiwi The Kiwi

ISSUE 66 - 15/09/09

Welcome to Issue 66 of Current Lines

Marlin already??
A stripey was sighted off Cape Brett in July ...Coming or going...who knows?  Also the commercial boys are getting numerous Big Eye 70 miles out off the Bay of Islands on the seamounts and are regularly getting stripies on their longlines....The fish are there...if people are prepared to go 50-60 miles off the west coast of the South Island, perhaps they should be investigating their own offshore fishery over winter??

On the West Coast some very notable bluefin captures have been made to date; Lance Patullo from the Hauraki Gulf Sportfishing Club has a 307 kg monster to his name caught on 60 kg line off the Te Ariki Nui, 19 year old Katherine Randrup from Tauranga has a pending new Ladies world record claim a massive 281 kg caught on 60 kg tackle eclipsing the previous record by a whopping 58 kg.

Hiwi The Kiwi Goes Fishing – The Show is on the Road -- We are currently seeking a license to raffle a Profile Boat during Dec, Jan, Feb

The “Hiwi The Kiwi Goes Fishing Official Launch” was held at Frimley School (won ‘Primary School of the Year’ twice) on Friday 31st July.  This show rocks!! With 30 schools now having seen the show, 65 schools in the areas visited have now booked for 2010! The hospitality and support extended by the NZBGFC clubs as The Minstrel has visited has been awesome. This is an ideal opportunity to showcase your club to hundreds of new junior members…What have you got organised for when the Minstrel is performing in your area?

Council Vice President, Evan Mackay, is touring with the Minstrel promoting Hiwi the Kiwi and towing the boat which will be raffled once the license is obtained. Testimonials from sponsors who attended the launch;
“I attended the Hiwi the Kiwi launch on Friday at Frimley School, Hastings. Two local politicians attended, as did the press, and other sponsors with Richard Baker President NZBGFC.  While I was not a strong supporter of funding this initiative initially and was keen to see the product in it s final form, I was impressed with the high level of professionalism of Mark de Lacy (The Minstrel) and the quality of the program for the children.  Given the length and breadth of exposure of Council and Foundation (3 years) I would say that we have got very good value for money and will reap rewards from this education program.   This will be multiplied as local clubs associate themselves with the program as it tours New Zealand. “
Regards, Peter Davie  (Professor of Comparative Anatomy, IVABS Massey University. Trustee NZ Marine Research Foundation)

 “I attended the launch last Friday and really enjoyed the experience. Couldn’t believe how well behaved the kids were! They were right into it and had obviously done some preliminary work prior to the Minstrels’ visit as many had created posters supporting the call to look after the fishing resource. From a WSNZ perspective the incorporation of water safety messages around the importance of learning to swim, adult supervision around all water based activities and the wearing of life jackets at all times on boats was excellent. Good to see local MP’s Chris Tremain and Craig Foss made the effort to attend.”
