ISSUE 1 - 16.12.09
Welcome to Issue 1 Current Lines
New Zealand Sport Fishing Council Inc (NZSFC)
Welcome to the first edition of Current Lines under our new name, which was registered by the Registrar of Incorporated Societies effective 10/12/2009. Whoever said that the path of change is never smooth certainly wasn’t wrong. Who would have thought that the change, which clearly reflects the path that the Council and its affiliated clubs have taken over the past 15 years, would result in others, who said at our Whakatane AGM, that they would be better off without the Council, feeling so threatened??!! Representation in fisheries management and engaging with the politicians is only one facet of the functions that the NZSFC offers its membership. SPARC have clearly recognised and support the path that the Council is taking. Our history is a matter of record. It will never change and can’t be lost. What is important is that we focus on what is required for the future growth and success of the Council. Immediately that succession lies with our children, the fishermen of tomorrow, hence our strong emphasis on the Hiwi the Kiwi project. Please note that NZSFC’s new email address is secretary@nzsportfishing.org.nz. Contact phone and fax numbers remain unchanged. Work is underway with a new logo and website to be developed.
First Marlin of the Season?? We are still awaiting for that first radio message “Hooked up!” It must be soon as the water we seek is getting closer by the day, reports from our colleagues in the commercial sector are reporting big-eye, yellow-fin and marlin just out of reach of the trailer brigade. No doubt there will be a flurry soon. To be eligible for the first marlin of the season, the catch must be reported (Copy of the Weigh Sheet) to Secretary, Roz Nelson fax 09-433-9640 email roz@nzsportfishing.org.nz
Dave Howes – 50kg Kingfish The Big news comes from The Big Fish Fishing Club where weighmaster Dave Howes has weighed a kingfish at a wopping 50kg!! The fish was caught off Pursuit at the Ranfurly Banks on 15kg mono and wasn’t weighed until 2 days after capture. The fish was caught in about 70m of water with a jack mackerel live bait on a 6/0 Black Magic live bait hook. There were 5 guys fishing at the time, 2 on 37kg mono and 2 jigging on 37kg braid - so the dancing and weaving was pretty spectacular! After about 20 minutes things got a bit tense when the spool was visible with no more than 20 metres of line left on the reel. Skipper Rick Pollock used the boat and followed the fish, which was boated after 35 - 40 minutes. Dave gives a big thanks to Rick & Zane for their boat handling, advice and encouragement and to the other guys on the boat for landing their fish and getting their lines out of the water in record time. The current world records on 15 & 37kg lines are 52kg. This monumental capture also backs up another fish of 46kg’s taken by Dave last year!!
Tauranga 272kg Broadbill The Tauranga Game Fishing Club weighed in a 272kg broadbill swordfish last month. The fish was in about 5m of water off the knoll at Motiti and was captured by a couple of guys in a small boat. They found it flapping around in some shallow water, raced over and threw a rope around it and with a huge effort, managed to drag it on board. It was obviously sick or had been injured because it didn't worry about them being right beside it.
Mako & Porbeagle Sharks to be Protected In Australia, from 31st January 2010, 3 further species of shark will become fully protected in the same manner as Great Whites. They are the Short & Long Finned Mako & Porbeagle Sharks. Incredibly, their legislation is structured so that the ban will only apply to recreational fishers, as their commercial long lining has the tick of approval from their Dept of Environment!!! Clearly this has major ramifications for our members should NZ follow suit. A letter is being drafted to both MFish and the Minister requesting that Makos and Porbeagles be declared recreational only species in the same manner in which we have had marlin declared and successfully managed as a recreational only fishery. Hiwi the Kiwi Raffle The sales of raffle tickets for the 520 Profile Boat and 70hp Yamaha motor are now underway having commenced 1/12/09. Tickets are available from your clubs and the more sellers that we can get out and about the better. Tickets are $5 each with a discount for the entire book at $40. The success of the raffle is critical to the continuation of the Hiwi the Kiwi educational program for which the ultimate benefit will be your clubs future members. The key is not to just sell them within the club but to get them sold out in the community. The NZFSC thanks all you ticket sellers for your support!!
