Hiwi The Kiwi
NZSFC Current Lines - Issue 2 - 31/12/09 - the last for this decade - roll on 2010
NZ Sport Fishing would like to congratulate the awarding of our first two trophies, the winners are;
Mark McDowell tagged and released a 180 kg (est) blue marlin at 10.00am 24.12.2009. Caught in the sponsored grid ‘Hiwi the Kiwi.’ See www.fishgrid.com for area.

At 3:00pm 26.12.09 Sam Marsh, 10, landed a Striped Marlin of 133.0 kg on 37kg with his father Brian Marsh as skipper. A pending Club, New Zealand and World record claim for a small-fry angler (Up to 11 yrs)

Over the past week catches which have been recorded are;
A double of Big Eye Tuna off the boat Xtrovert caught n/east of the Aldermans on the 600m line - 44.1 & 45.4 kg (triple strike but one lost straight away).

Yellowfin Tuna weighed at the Tauranga Game Fishing Club. 63kg, off the boat Aptyryx, a large trailer boat.  Was caught way outside the Aldermans in about 500m, an awesome catch on 22-12-09

A  62.4 kg Big Eye Tuna caught by Tim Wheeler (Jnr) on 23.12.09 fishing from the family boat Reel Obsession, and a couple of days later a shortbill spearfish by the same angler.

Tim's fish is a pending club record and I believe the first caught in NZ this season. Also of note his brother Troy is the current club jnr record holder so a family affair indeed.

From Whitianga, they report a 283.7 kg Black marlin caught by ex-club President Penny Murray from their own launch with just the two on board.

Clubs also to feature on the Y-fin tuna stakes are; Waihau Bay with a 60.2 kg, Whangaroa with several around the 30-35 kg range, and the BOI with a massive 70+kg yellowfin to a non-member. They also could have had the first marlin tagged for NZ had the angler been a member.

It is safe to predict that once this sou-westerly shift has gone through, the places to be will be the Cape Brett – Cavalli region and the waters from the back of Gt Barrier Island to Aldermans back of Mayor region, with most ports on our north-eastern coast reporting action. In order to catch one of our prized game fish you will have to safely venture out, weather permitting, and just go fishing.

We are almost one month into the Hiwi the Kiwi Raffle
  With sales of tickets for the 520 Profile Boat and 70hp Yamaha motor now well underway having commenced 1.12.09. Tickets are available from your clubs and the more sellers that we can get out and about the better. Tickets are $5 each with a discount for the entire book at $40. (Just write ‘BOOK’ on the front and the one name for the whole book).  The success of the raffle is critical to the continuation of the Hiwi the Kiwi youth educational program for which the ultimate benefit will be your clubs future members. The key is not to just sell them within the club but to get them sold out in the community. The NZFSC thanks all ticket sellers for their support! For enquiries contact NZSFC secretary at; secretary@nzsportfishing.org.nz or visit the Hiwi the Kiwi goes fishing website; http://www.hiwithekiwi.co.nz which is now up and running. This will have all the current info on schools booked for 2010, where you can purchase tickets in our major Profile boat package, and further information about our junior fishing program as it comes to date. The site is still being developed and modules due to be added soon are our junior anglers “Kids” section, a photo gallery, and teachers resources.

Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show, (13 - 16th May 2010) is supporting our Hiwi the Kiwi Goes Fishing initiative which will be promoted as a major attraction for kids at the show.  We are looking for our Clubs members to participate so you can promote both the Council and your own Clubs – there will be an area made available – this is a great opportunity.  We are also seeking interested volunteers who may be able to assist us in manning the site.

As we say bye, bye to the first decade of this millennium and hello to the 20ten, we at NZSF wish all a great new year’s fishing and a prosperous fishing season.

Tight lines
