Hi Everyone This season has kicked off in a big way in between our fickle weather patterns at present, with a majority of clubs both on east and west coasts being on the board with good sized fish in good numbers for those braving the conditions either crystal clear and hot or cloudy and humid. In no other order apart from where I start and with no such precedent; NZSF NATIONALS 2011– this is one of NZ’s premier line class points scoring events, where all from the biggest gin palace down to the team fishing off a wharf can win a national title, all game fish from the People’s kahawai up to the mighty broadbill swordfish are the target species. Don't forget your Nationals Registrations! 19th - 26th February. Check out this special offer for a 6 day charter out of the Bay of Islands during the Nationals. Click here. Big Mako – Light LineFrom the Bay of Islands Eldorado tournament, news has filtered through of a fine mako shark weighing 324 kg caught by Dean Pollock off the launch Reel Escape skippered by a 2nd generation skipper Matt Smith. What is incredible, the fight lasted 5 ½ hours, was a mere 5 kg short of the current world record, and a new “New Zealand record” claim for a mako caught on 10 kg line, a tremendous effort by all involved. The Mangawhai Boating & Fishing Clubhas opened their catch book this season with two nice marlin, a striped marlin caught by Murray Dix from the trailer boat Get Reel skippered by owner “Buck” Buchanan. The second marlin weighed was a blue marlin caught on another trailer boat Wild West skippered by Darryl Adams caught by son Cameron Adams weighing 144 kg, that’s two nice marlin in two days for the Mangawhai club. Big Tuna- Whangaroa has had its share of striped and blue marlin this season to date but it’s the two tuna that have the angling fraternity sitting up taking notice, a Big eye tuna that weighed 116 kg gutted not a record or a trophy winning fish just a very nice big tuna. The second tuna made the big guns sit up as well, caught on an over-sized egg beater, lucky angler David Falconer using a stella 2000 and 37 kg braid (his jigging rod as he left the other game rod at home) with a little pink, yellow, and white tuna lure, caught his 80.1kg yellowfin tuna on another trailer boat, the boat Bully II skippered this day by Hayden Foster. David is a member of the Whangamata Ocean Sports Club. TV fishing sensation Matt Watsonhas another first to crow about on television and we bet all kiwi anglers alike can’t wait to see this capture on an upcoming show. Fishing from the vessel Cova Rose they went out for a broadbill drift out from Greymouth. Well they weren’t out there long when it struck, it weighed in at 205 kg and is believed to be the first recreationally caught broadbill for the wild west coast of the South Island. New Zealand anglers are singing the Blues. There seems to be a good number of these ocean speedsters out wide, from Waihau Bay. Angler Nathan McNeil landed a 316.3 kg blue that had a very very short bill off the trailer boat Oceanside II, up the coast a bit, well quite a bit Warkworth vessel First Affair with their team on board, all over 65, weighed in a sister to the Waihau Bay blue at 315.4 kg, and another boat the Matariki with lady angler Emma boated her blue weighing 316.4 kg with only a single kilo between them they almost came out of the same mould. Tutukaka have weighed 6 Blue Marlin over 500lbs (227kg) in the last week and two of those were over 300kg. There have also been many stories of similar sized freight trains hooked and dropped Not to be outdone NZSFC President and IGFA representative Richard Baker who was out on the in-laws launch Final Decision was not to be outdone. He found some water that went 24 degrees and was almost purple, after an hour 15 he landed his blue of 279.4kg caught on 37kg standup tackle. In his words “I’m getting too old for this, I’m sore in places that I didn’t know existed. The lure was a "Mrs Palmer”, a lure that is firmly nestled into Toots local folklore. Hiwi the Kiwi Supporters Packs– don’t forget to get your Supporters Packs - $5 will purchase you a couple of stickers and the chance to win a monthly prize or a Profile Boat package worth $50,000.
