Good Stripie Well done to angler Richard Alexander, who on his own boat a 550 Stabicraft, along with a mate, went out for a west coast fish on 09-04-2011. After a short time he hooked up on his lure to a marlin, a very reasonably sized striped marlin for the west coast on 24kg line. Short time later they boated this striped marlin and headed in to weigh it at his club weighstation. Once at the Big Fish clubrooms (aka the Big Fish tackle shop) the marlin weighed in at a very credible 197.00kg. It was a beast to behold, well done to Richard and crew.
JetPark One of the benefits of belonging to a NZSFC affiliated club is that we can offer our membership a special accommodation package with secure parking if you are traveling overseas or domestically and departing from Auckland. The JetPark offer free pick up and drop off to the airports, free parking if you stay with them for a night. For further information please email Roz at; secretary@nzsportfishing.org.nz
Christchurch Earthquake We would like to acknowledge the fantastic efforts of those anglers who donated part of their smoked marlin caught during one of the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club events and shipped it down to the helpers and international search and rescue teams after the Christchurch earthquake. This was spread around the teams who came to the aid of our southern members.
The Season The current season is not over yet, with the banks around the Three Kings still fishing reasonably well for striped marlin, albeit a little patchy at times. Boats are still reporting better than average trips with some getting up to 5 marlin over three days, while others are targeting broadbill. Several Broadbill have been weighed with one of note caught at the back of Great Barrier Island weighing in at 275 kg.
Recently a well-known Bay of Islands trailerboat Bluefix was launched from Rangiputa and headed out for a broadbill trip with Brad and Kyle Thomas on-board. The outcome from their overnight trip was a broadbill each landed, both on 37kg line. Kyle’s went 167kg and is a pinfish for the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club. The second went 223kg for Brad and is also a pin for the Bay of Island Swordfish Club.
Just received a report that a potential NZ & World Record Spearfish has been weighed at Houhora - 38.70 kgs. So don't put your fishing tackle away just yet.
