NZSFC “Rena” media release
NZ Sport Fishing Council have closely monitored the unfolding events from the “Rena” grounding with increasing concern at the impact on this once pristine marine environment, and are concerned about the long term implications on Astrolabe reef and surrounding areas, particularly Motiti Island and the inshore coastline of all of the Bay of Plenty
We trust that the authorities are doing everything possible to control this extremely complex & difficult situation, and we strongly encourage all members of the various sport fishing clubs within the greater BOP region who are affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council (about 16,000 members) to get involved however they can to help clean up the mess. It is strongly recommended that they join one of the coordinated voluntary clean up programsto help bring our marine environment, fish & shellfish stocks back to where they were prior to this tragedy as quickly as possible.
Regards
