Update # 2 – 23rd August 2009 "HIWI THE KIWI GOES FISHING"
Hi there from Paraparaumu
Its now 4 weeks since I left home to begin the project in Napier.
The “official” launch of the program was held at Frimley School in Hastings, where
distinguished guests included Chris Tremain and Craig Goss both MPs for the region, Dr
Peter Davie, long time supporter of the NZBGFC representing the NZ Marine Research
Foundation, Chris Robinson, Water Safety NZ and President Richard Baker all of whom
were most impressed with the presentation and content of the program.
After the first week a decision was made to withdraw the competition for the boat
following a negative response from almost every avenue and to replace it with a frequently
requested national raffle.
On to Palmerston Nth where Andrew, Barry and Darryl from the Tangimoana Boating Club
assisted with the school presentations, this included their clubs offer to every school to
participate in a local fishing contest.
It was most encouraging to see a direct response from the HTK project where schools,
retailers and the local fishing club developed a relationship that provided benefits to all.
Hunting and Fishing Manawatu provided a rod and reel to each of the 11 schools in the area*
and these went to a student selected by the school staff for a special effort.
Saturday featured a HTK promotion and BBQ at their store, and for the remainder of the
weekend I was a guest of the Tangimoana club, leaving there with some amusing and
pleasant memories. * For period Dec 09 to the end of February 2010.
Meetings with the Hunting and Fishing head office have resulted in them coming on board
as a supporter and offering the services of their 30 branches nationwide to promote the
project and sell tickets for the raffle.
Other promotions and initiatives are proposed with them for the future featuring HTK.
The response to date has been 100% in support of the program with bookings for next year
almost full for the areas so far visited.
The press coverage has also been good with some favourable articles and photos featuring
in the local papers. 20 schools and 7000 students so far visited continues to give confidence.
To avoid any confusion or disappointment should anyone wanting a school
included for a show, I recommend you forward the name of the school and
contact details direct to the Minstrel for him to arrange the booking.
