Current Lines 19th September 2013

I see a Red Door and I want to paint it black.. a good loud song. Go the team Emirates Kiwi Americas Cup challenge team. Wow 80 km per hour on a good leg. 0 to 25 knots acceleration - what a wonderful spectacle it has been to date. Who would have thought that when Oracle asked to see what we have under the water we would show them the way we did at 44.50 off balance at least until our captain courageous got it under control. If you haven’t done so already I’m sure there are plenty of Sir Peter Blake’s Lucky Red Socks still on the market for sale, and the team sailors recommend them.

The All Blacks are un-beaten after 4 rounds of the Investec Championship, with an injury list growing by the game – Go Black – Be strong.

BREAKING NEWS  - Snapper 1 decision announced 17-09-2013. Where will this leave us and will it reduce the colossal commercial wastage? Well, well, well and that’s not three holes in the ground. The TAC has increased 50T up to 8050 tonnes, our recreational bag limit has been cut to 7 and the minimum size increased to 30cm in order for MPI scientists to improve the fish stock by 1% NO Commercial reduction! Outrageous!  A 22% reduction in the recreational fishers daily bag limit. This will take effect from April 1st 2014. Is this not April FOOLS day? To read LegaSea’s response to this go to; www.legasea.co.nz/documents/SNA1-LegaSea-media-Sep13.pdf

Thank you to the 48,000 plus people who submitted via the LegaSea website. Also to the nearly 4,000 other individuals who submitted directly to the Snapper1 proposal directly to MPI. The LegaSea effort created some 371,928 emails to parliamentarians from the major parties; some were heard to say "we did not expect to receive 30,000 emails a day in our inboxes because of this." With an election year coming up it will be interesting.

On the fishing scene, not much up north that I can pick up on, snapper are in reasonable numbers and size, kingfish are there but slightly smaller and fickle on the bite, BUT the giant pacific bluefin tuna are making their presence felt by a few of the more dedicated anglers.

Earlier this month diminutive angler Leanne Dixon went out fishing on Cova Rose. After an unsuccessful attempt last time, a few trips to the gym were first on the bucket list to cross off. Leanne eventually hooked up to a beauty on 60 kg line and eventually got to weigh her pending world record claim, a 294.5 kg beast which was 81.5 kg bigger than the current world record. Paperwork, measuring and a JP’s signature later, and a world record claim was ready to be sent in. Well done to Leanne and the crew involved.

Not to be out done Brian Mankelon towed the 7.3m Surtees trailer boat Game AZ down from the super City, Auckland, and after watching Leanne’s fish being weighed headed out the next day and caught his first pacific bluefin tuna for himself and the boat, weighing 215 kg. Not a record but a lot of sushi for the families and friends.
