Current Lines 23rd December 2013
The last song on Coast Radio was by CCR, there is a small silence I look out the window and see “a bad moon rising”. Fishing wise that is a great big glowing golden orb. Who said fishing is bad on a BIG moon?

As at 2145 hours Sunday 22nd December after an extensive two hours trolling the normal hotspots for anything gamefishing and fish related gossip I have the following to report below. This weekend one would have thought the fish would have been leaping into game boats up and down the country, yet on VHF channel 4 all I heard throughout the day was three yatchies moaning “not enough wind to sail up to the BOI”, and they had to use their motors although one had caught two albacore up outside Mimiwhangata.
This summer - fish to date - with great anticipation we all have awaited for the seasons firsts to be called in. Early in the month a tagged and released Shortbill spearfish for BOI angler Marc Noakes, from the 11th December there was a good sized Bigeye tuna from Whitianga to angler Simon Brown off the vessel Humdinger weighing in at 114.60 kg although Chris Rippey's Bigeye was caught first back on the 24th October, from the 14th December a Blue marlin was lost after a prolonged fight by a solo angler hooking the fish on 24kg only for it to die on the bottom. Several other marlin were seen during the fight, a large tuna was lost close to the boat off the Alderman rise, with marlin seen in 1100m of water north of the rise, and a striped marlin was lost at the back of Great Barrier Island. From the 15th Striped marlin and Shortbill spearfish were seen out by White Island whilst looking for tuna, 16th two Striped marlin were lost from the same boat an hour apart down off Waihau Bay, and on the 17th Striped marlin were seen feeding at Motiti Island, BOP. With this much action so far it is only time on the water that is restricting the first marlin of the season to be caught.
And there have been some good sized snapper reported. The heaviest by BOI Swordfish Club member Guy Jacobsen weighing 14 kg, caught on the 25th November; Don Arnold caught and weighed his 12.410 kg fish at Hawkes Bay on 7th December and Louis Wright from the Mercury Bay Club weighed in a 12.21 kg snapper on the 21st December.
