MARLIN FROM A JET SKI - 13/2/2011 - 15 February 2011

14/02/2011. A Northland fisherman has caught and landed a 79.6kg striped marlin from his jetski, believed to be the first man to do so in New Zealand waters.

We also hear that a number of boats/properties at Waihau Bay have been targeted.

If you are offered ‘CHEAP’ fishing/boating equipment it might well pay to get the serial numbers and check with local police before handing over your coin.

AUSTRALIA FEDS GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO MARLIN AND TUNA SLAUGHTER - 22 January 2011

Despite recent moves by countries such as Peru and Panama to protect marlin and other sportfish, the Gillard Labor Government will ignore scientific advice and protests by gamefishing organisations and allow long-line fleets to catch thousands of tonnes of tuna and billfish off Australia’s east coast over the next 12 months.

The New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 (NZCPS) came into force on 3 December 2010. The NZCPS is a key policy document under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). It provides direction to decision-makers on how they should provide for coastal management in New Zealand through regional policy statements and regional and district plans. The objectives and policies are intended to guide decision makers in drafting policy statements and plans that in any way relate to the coastal environment. The NZCPS is also required to be considered when making a decision on consent applications, notices of requirement and plan changes.

REMINDER TO ANGLERS LEADER LENGTH - 16 January 2011

All anglers are reminded to check the compliance of their doubles and leaders when fishing. A 293kg Blue marlin was disqualified by its club at the weekend as the leader measured 400mm longer than IGFA rules.It is the anglers responsibility to ensure that their rigs comply with regulations and rules. FIRST MARLIN OF THE SEASON FOR PAKURANGA CLUB - 16 January 2011

 

First Marlin of Season for Big Fish Fishing Club, Pakuranga

Howick and Pakuranga residents are possibly used to seeing anglers catch kahawai and snapper off the beaches and around the estuaries of the area. Any trip to the ramps at Half Moon Bay will show how good local anglers are when they come back after a day’s fishing. However, few would ever have seen  a large striped marlin in the middle of suburbia hanging from scales mounted to a forklift! That it was caught  no more than 45kms from Pakuranga (as the seagulls fly!) is probably more surprising.

HONORARY FISHERIES OFFICER IN NEW YEARS HONOURS - 12 January 2011

Ministry of Fisheries Acting Chief Executive Andrew Coleman has today congratulated Honorary Fishery Officer Murray Daniels from Motunau, North Canterbury who has received a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s honours.

HFO Daniels has been recognised for his contribution to volunteer work in the Motunau community through many years of selfless service as an Honorary Fishery Officer and also as a volunteer fire fighter.

Check out www.fishgrid.com and see where the fish are being caught. If you register you can access information (free of charge) on what fish are being caught where by many member clubs.

If you are heading out for a marlin fish then check out the fish grids and see where the action is and where most fish are being caught. It will certainly improve your chances of landing the big one.

If your club hasn't joined Fishgrid then ask your committee or club manager to consider the service.
