New Zealand Sport Fishing takes an active role in fisheries management and research on behalf of its members. A levy of 50 cents per member is forwarded to the NZ Marine Research Foundation which in turn partially funds research by Blue Water Marine Ltd. Over the past years they have conducted comprehensive POP & PAT tagging programs of Striped Marlin that have given us and the angling world, an insight into the behaviour and movements of this sought after species. (Striped Marlin in New Zealand are recognised as the largest in the world).
Blue Water Marine Research Ltd (1997) www.bluewatermarine.co.nz was established by John Holdsworth and Peter Saul, who together have over 40 years experience in fisheries management and research. They are based near the port of Tutukaka in northern New Zealand and projects have been undertaken throughout New Zealand, from Fiordland to Wanganella Banks.
There have been many technological advances in the way marine species are studied and Blue Water Marine Research is a leader in the use of electronic fish tag technology in New Zealand. Inshore Fisheries management projects and production of submissions has also advanced.
The Quota Management System (QMS) has been effective in rationalising the commercial fleet but employs complex decision making and consultation processes. A full understanding of legislative and research requirements is essential to get valid scientific results and in the production of submissions to The Ministry of Fisheries. Blue Water Marine Research have considerable experience in fisheries research and management systems in New Zealand and this knowledge has been valuable in providing quality research and advice on fisheries and marine issues.
The opportunity for an overall sponsor or partner to be involved with assisting NZSF are significant. Sponsorship options have been developed and further information can be obtained by contacting us secreatry@nzsportfishing.org.nz or events@nzsportfishing.org.nz
