Fisheries System Review 2015

Introduction

On 19 August 2015 Nathan Guy, the Minister for Primary Industries (MPI), announced a review of the current fisheries management system. It is intended to be a high level review and not expected to discuss details such as bag limits or quota limits.

Over the following few weeks MPI officials would be contacting interest groups to seek their “views on the strengths and weaknesses of the current system, and opportunities and priorities for change”.

MPI will then collate that feedback into a report and the Minister would decide on the next steps after reviewing that report.

Minister Guy advised, “Possible options include include changes to fisheries management processes within the current legislation, regulatory change, and amendments to the Fisheries Act”.
