Ruapuke Island Mātaitai 2024
DECISION: PENDING
Introduction
On 9 July Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) advised of the application for a mātaitai reserve around the Ruapuke Island Group, Foveaux Strait, Southland. Submissions were due with FNZ by 19 August 2024.
The NZSFC worked with local fishers and the Southern Sport Fishing Club in making their own submissions. We also worked with LegaSea, New Zealand Angling & Casting Association and New Zealand Underwater Association to develop a submission in response to the application.
Our joint submission opposes the application on the basis that the proposed potential bylaws are biased towards supporting ongoing commercial harvest while seeking to constrain recreational harvest.
The submission was sent to FNZ on 15 August. There is no indication of when the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Shane Jones may make a decision.
2023 application
FNZ advise that the process to consult with locals on a similar mātaitai application during 2023 has been withdrawn.
