Waimārama temporary closure 2020 -22
DECISION: APPROVED
Introduction
On 5 November 2020 Fisheries New Zealand advised they were consulting on a request by Ngāi Hapū o Waimarama for a 2-year closure along the Waimarama coastline, Hawkes Bay.
The 2-year temporary closure was for a total ban on the taking of blackfoot pāua, under section 186A of the Fisheries Act 1996.
On 16 December we were advised by Fisheries New Zealand that David Parker, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, had approved the 2-year s186A temporary closure to all non-commercial harvest of blackfoot pāua. Details below.
FNZ also advised that the commercial harvest of pāua within the designated area was already prohibited under Regulation 10 of the Fisheries (Central Area Commercial Fishing) Regulations 1986.
On 17 August 2022, a further 2-year extension on the temporary closure was sought.
On 22 November the Minister confirmed he had approved the request to temporarily close part of the Hawke Bay coastline to the harvest of blackfoot pāua. The temporary closure applies from 23 December 2022 and extends until December 2024.
Submission
On 2 December 2020, the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council and LegaSea Hawkes Bay submitted in support of the requested temporary closure.
On 3 October 2022, the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, LegaSea Hawkes Bay, New Zealand Angling & Casting Association, and LegaSea jointly submitted in support of the request for the extension of the closure.
