CRA 3, 4 & 8 TAC review 2019

DECISION: MIXED

Introduction

Crayfish Quota Management Areas.

On 18 December 2018 Fisheries New Zealand advised they were consulting on changes to the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) in CRA 3 (Gisborne), CRA 4 (Hawke Bay-Wellington) and CRA 8 (Southland).

Fisheries New Zealand proposed to decrease the TAC and TACC in CRA 3, increase the TAC and TACC in CRA 4 and CRA 8.

Submissions in response to the proposals were due by 12 February 2019.

From December 2018 to February 2019 the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council worked with the LegaSea team and Spearfishing NZ to develop 9 nine recommendations to better manage crayfish stocks in the future.

Following the announcement of the Minister’s final decision we learnt that commercial interests had submitted supplementary submissions on CRA 4 in early March, weeks after the submission period had closed. Those submissions are included below for reference.
