TAC review CRA 2, 4, 7 & 8. Jan 2018

DECISION: MIXED

Introduction

Crayfish management areas

On 12 January 2018 Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) advised they were consulting on changes to the Total Allowable Catches (TACs), allowances and Total Allowable Commercial Catches (TACCs) in CRA 2, 4, 7 & 8.

Submissions in response to the proposals were due with FNZ by 9 February 2018. Any changes would apply from 1 April 2018.

Stuart Nash, Minister of Fisheries, announced his decisions for the various crayfish stocks on 26 March 2018.

The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council welcomed the Minister’s decision for CRA 2 in particular, while acknowledging that closure was an option that the Minister could have chosen. However, there was no political appetite for such action at the time.
