Tautuku Mātaitai application

DECISION: PENDING

Introduction

Proposed Tautuku mataitai.

On 4 February 2020 Fisheries New Zealand advised they had a received an application for a mātaitai reserve in Tautuku, Southland. The application was from Te Rūnanga o Awarua who have customary interests in the area that includes several traditional fishing grounds.

FNZ is consulting firstly with the local community and a second consultation will occur with others who fish in the applicant area, quota owners or people who will be affected by the proposed mātaitai.

Submission

In March 2020 the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council submitted in support of the proposed mātaitai.

The Council also supports our local club, the Tautuku Fishing Club, in their desire to be involved in the development and ongoing management of the mātaitai. We consider their involvement as a positive step towards community engagement and ongoing support for the mātaitai.

Update

In January 2021 FNZ advised they were calling for further submissions in response to the mātaitai application from Te Rūnanga o Awarua. Submissions were due by 8 March 2021. The NZSFC did not submit another response, the March 2020 submission remains valid.

FNZ acknowledge the earlier consultation process and confirmed in January 2021 that no changes had been to the mātaitai application, and no management changes had been applied as a result of the earlier consultation process.
