Crayfish 3 Gisborne
Introduction
On 27 September 2016 the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) advised they were holding a 3-hour public drop-in session on the Crayfish 3 (CRA3) Gisborne fishery.
MPI advised this session was an opportunity to consider background information and ask any questions about the future management of CRA3, and how to get the best outcomes from the management of this important fishery.
MPI provided access to a CRA3 map and posters summarising current knowledge of the fishery. Feedback was due with MPI by 21 October 2016.
The Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club and New Zealand Sport Fishing Council worked together and delivered a CRA3 submission on 21 October.

The Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club and New Zealand Sport Fishing Club joint submission on the review of the Crayfish 3 (CRA3) rock lobster fishery. The joint submitters recommend the Minister improves the performance of the CRA3 fishery by firstly addressing the sustainability concerns of non-commercial stakeholders, and agreeing to remove the concession enablng the commercial harvest of crayfish smaller than the Minimum Legal Size that applies to recreational fishing. A full review of rock lobster management in NZ is required.

In July 2014 the Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club developed a policy for the future management of Crayfish 3. The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council ratified and adopted this CRA3 policy at the Annual General Meeting held on 27 September 2014. Key elements of this policy include no increase to the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) in CRA3 until the concession is revoked and there is sufficient abundance of crayfish to provide for public use in a reasonable manner and timeframe.
